Belle Isle Residents Association Accomplishments

·  Lobbied the City to implement a Residential Parking Zone on Belle Isle;

·  Worked with Miami Beach CIP and County officials during planning and construction of park and streets; convinced county to widen streets 7 feet more than proposed and add commercial loading zones in front of 9 Island and Costa Brava.  (Can you imagine what it would be like if our streets were 7 feet narrower with no commercial loading zones?!?!);

·  Advocated for temporary pedestrian walkways and temporary lighting during construction of Belle Isle Park and streetscape;

·  Lobbied the City to install bike racks in the park;

·  Lobbied the City to install benches in the dog park;

·  Lobbied the City to install additional landscaping to provide a visual buffer to hide the unattractive pump station; City finally did install much more landscaping than originally planned;

·  At residents’ request, lobbied the City to plant additional landscaping in the swale on the north side of Venetian way to provide a visual barrier to parked cars;

·  Lobbied the City and Commissioners and convinced the City to dozens of additional trees in the park above and beyond what was in the original landscaping plans);

·  Worked with the City to eliminate street flooding on Belle Isle;

·  Convinced City to install an odor-control device on the pump station (NOT part of the original plans).   Odor has been eliminated;

·  Worked with County to get a traffic light installed at the intersection of Venetian Way and Purdy Avenue/Sunset Harbour Drive;

·  Worked with the City and The Standard Hotel in order to enforce and maintain noise ordinance on Belle Isle; Hotel has operated for several years with virtually no noise complaints.  In addition, Standard Hotel now offers neighborhood residents a 20% discount off of membership to the spa;

·  Worked with the Transportation and Parking Committee, the City of Miami Beach and Miami-Dade Transit to bring the South Beach Local to Belle Isle;

·  Organized residents to meet with developers, attorneys and the architect for 31 Venetian Way numerous times over a two-year period.  Attended all Design Review Board Meetings on behalf of residents.  Effectively lobbied to reduce size and drastically improve design of project to be more compatible with our neighborhood.  Will continue to advocate for the neighborhood on this and future construction projects;

·  Communicate regularly with residents and building managers to inform residents of projects and events that affect Belle Isle;

·  Organized debates for Commission/Mayor elections;

·  Organized Commissioner Meet and Greets with residents on several occasions;

·  Communicate regularly with City officials to get potholes repaired, graffiti removed, trees and landscaping replaced.

Subject: I support the West Avenue Bridge

Dear Mayor Bower and Commissioners,

I am writing to express my support for building the West Avenue Bridge.  I know you have heard from a very persistent and very vocal group of opponents on West Avenue, lower North Bay Road and the Townhouses at Sunset Harbour.  The same few people have spoken loudly and often.  They are angry about existing traffic conditions and lack of traffic calming in their neighborhoods.  They fear a bridge will only make things worse.

But it is important to consider what is good for the majority of residents in the city.  As you are well aware the Transportation and Parking Committee (to which you have all appointed members to represent you) as well as City Administration are in favor of building this bridge.  The Belle Isle Residents Association is also in favor of the bridge since the thousands of residents on the Venetian Causeway will be severely impacted if a bridge is not built to relieve the horrendous congestion that is already occurring into and out of Sunset Harbour via Purdy Avenue.

I hope to speak in person tomorrow at the meeting but please strongly consider these points when making your decision:

·         Sunset Harbour has become a popular destination neighborhood used by residents from all parts of the city with no easy way to get in or out.   When the existing construction of the parking garage and retail is completed, traffic will increase even more, including the 100+ city vehicles that will be moved from Flamingo park.  This is before any additional development already in the pipeline is approved including a condominium building proposed for the site of Mark’s Dry Cleaners;

·         The lack of ingress and egress to this neighborhood was inadequate before the city’s recent “improvement” to block access from 17th and Venetian Way to turn north onto Bay Road.  All traffic from 17thand West must now enter through Purdy.

·         In addition to being the main entrance from the south and west into Sunset Harbour, the Purdy/Venetian/Dade/17th intersection is the only way that thousands of Venetian Causeway residents and commuters on the Causeway can access the rest of the city.  Already this intersection is a mess, backing up traffic from all directions.

·         There is no safe pedestrian or bicycle access from West Avenue to the Sunset Harbour neighborhood;

·         Alton Road is the major entrance to our city from the two biggest causeways and traffic is going to continue to increase, particularly with plans to expand our convention center.  Traffic backups will cause cars to continue to seek alternate routes which include North Bay Road and West Avenue.   This will increase when Alton Road undergoes major drainage work and total reconstruction in the next few years.

·         Like it or not, West Avenue is and will continue to be a secondary connector between 5th and 17th Street for residents of the Venetian Causeway, Sunset Harbour and North Bay Road as well as people using it as an alternate to Alton Road.  Traffic IS going to increase on West Avenue whether a bridge is built or not.

·         Whatever development occurs on the South Shore Hospital site will add traffic to the MacArthur Causeway, West Avenue, 5th Street and Alton Road

Thank you for your consideration.
